Observe whether an individual in a number of environments. Ask questions within your ownself Does the individual handle weapons, are they abusive toward animals, the under privelaged, the underdog?

Does the individual have a history of violent behavors in other or previous long term relationships?
Is the individual active in substance abuse?
Does the individual have mood swings or bouts of depression, aggression?
Is the individual on medication whose side effects that can cause them to be suicidal or homicidal.
Avoid Isolation. Maintain and keep a network of friends and family who regularly check on you. Be a part of groups, social, civic, relegious where you allow yourself to be known appreciated. Structure your life in patterns of accountablity and openess. Do not allow yourself to be coerced, manipulated or intimidated into seperating yourself from genuine persons who love and value you.
Steer clear of environments where you are the object of ridicule and blame. The self-assured person commands respect and takes responsibility for their actions. However; you must not develop an attitude or mindsett of unwarnted blame/shame.
Develop a resolve. Know who you are and where you desire to go be and do. If your goals and life focus is clear and well defined it is difficult to be coerced into a sidebar. Once you see the relationship is a derailed train haave the boldness to move on. Count your losses and exit. Exit emotionaly, exit physically, exit financially.
Be financially independent. Do not allow anyone to control your income. "Your mama may have and your papa may hve but God bless the child that has got his own" . How true is that popular tune sung by the famed Billy Holiday...You can control you own destiny when you control you money. Never allow youself to be in a situation that you are dependant on someone elses funds for survival. Develop, skills, hobbies, an avocation to fall back on. Life is filled with the unexpected. Be economicaly prepared.

Never allow a third party to be used as bate or hostage in atwo party relationship. Keep the focus of a two party relationship on the principals.
Remind yourself that this is just between two people. Don't allow in-laws, children, relatives, things past nor present to be weilded as a wedged as a wedge.

Regardless of any situation or circumstance you may find yourself in find and take inspiration to be your mantra. Any individual how intimidates or manupulates is filled with fear. Fear is the root of the minsset of control. Kmow that Inspiration brings empowerment. Th is the antidote to fear.

Too often, victims of aggression are isolated from friends and family who could provide intervention. Any individual who controls your access to a viable support system is not operating in your best interest.

Wisdom and diplomacy dictates that one does not fight fire with fire. Head on confruntation will often be met by open all out war. Educate your family. Find out what disasters are possible for your area whether it be earthquakes, tornados, hurricanes, flooding, etc.Make a "Ready to Go" kit or a "72 Hour" kit. Store it in a specific place in the home where everyone knows where it is and can get to it. Water, water, water - remember, you can live many days without food, but not without water.
